Today, I am proud to say that I'm a UX designer - now you might be thinking "What's the big deal? Most UX designers are more or less the same, right?" Well my story is a little different than most and it started when I graduated from the University of British Columbia and began my career as an engineering consultant. I spent 7 years working in the mining and building industry and picked up a few skills and gained some amazing experiences along the way. My consulting work brought me to some interesting places like an open pit mine in Australia, the open wilderness of Alaska, and on top of high-rise towers in Vancouver, but at the end of the day it was always about the data, the numbers, the analysis, the calculations, and not a lot of interactions with humans...that was my life for a while and the lack of having a creative outlet was beginning to drain my soul dry. So I started producing videos on the side and immediately fell in love with it. I enjoyed meeting new people, listening to their stories, and understanding why they do what they do. The whole process of planning the production, scripting the narrative, interviewing people, and editing the final product was really fun to put together. Unfortunately, it wasn't sustainable to manage my work load and run my creative projects on the side and so I started to look for other opportunities that would have both elements and that's when I discovered UX design. It was the perfect combination of bringing my analytical and logical thinking to design solutions in a creative and meaningful way. So I decided to shift my career into UX design and I have not looked back ever since. As a proud UX designer, I'm able to bring my engineering principles and apply it to what really matters - the people.
